BLLAHWU goes to Nata fully charged

FRANCISTOWN: Botswana Land Boards, Local Authorities and Health Workers Union (BLLAHWU) goes to its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Nata this weekend in a fighting mood after the suspension of its president by the government.

A union official said that BLLAHWU will not be intimidated by the government's decision to suspend its president, Goretetse Cut Kekgonegile for engaging in politics. BLLAHWU secretary general, Ketlhalefile Motshegwa was steadfast yesterday that Kekgonegile is still BLLAHWU president. He stated that: "Politics is a calling and there is no way in which a trade union and its leaders could abandon political issues".

The mood in BLLAHWU is simply that the struggle has begun. "To us, this is a clear testimony that we are in a struggle. It is an inspiration which instills resistance in the working class," Motshegwa said. He indicated that if the move to suspend Kekgonegile is part of the government's bigger strategy to intimidate workers, then this will not succeed. "We are going to Nata more united than ever. As I speak to you, we have been inundated with calls from general union membership wanting to attend the meeting in large numbers, but unfortunately only 500 delegates are eligible to attend," he stated.
