Blackouts to continue

The country will continue to experience power outages until the end of August when full commissioning of the first two units of the Morupule B Power Station is expected to be complete, the BPC has said. In a statement released this week, BPC confirms technical faults in commissioning the first two 150 MW units at the Chinese-built P11 billion power station.

They expect to fully rectify the problems and complete commissioning in the next eight weeks. "The commissioning of Units 1 and 2 is expected to be completed by the end of August 2012, barring the unforeseen. The construction of unit 3 and 4 is well underway. The units are expected to be commissioned by the end of the third and fourth quarter of 2012, respectively," reads a statement from the power utility.Of the first two units, which are supposed to be pumping 300MW by now into the national grid, the BPC says remedial work is currently ongoing.

"The first unit was connected to the BPC system for the first time on February 27, 2012 and disconnected on March 2, 2012 as part of the commissioning process. It was again connected to the BPC system on March 12, 2012, followed by a 15-day reliability test. The unit has been able to generate up to 150MW, thus alleviating the supply demand deficit.
