BHPC threatens health workers

In what is seen as an effort to coerce striking nurses and doctors to go back to work, the Botswana Health Professions Council (BHPC) has said it will not hesitate to de-register health professionals found flouting medical ethics and other oaths.

In a press statement, the BHPC chairman Dr Moeketsi Makhema said its members (nurses and doctors), while negotiations between government workers and the employer are on going, should abide by moral and ethical principles consistent with the health care service delivery "in accordance with professional codes of conduct and the relevant oaths".

Makhema also said that his organisation is concerned with the impact of the strike on health care delivery. In response, Botswana Junior Doctors Association official Dr Odirile Bakae said he has not read the full text of the BHPC statement, " but I can assure you we will respond tomorrow".
