BFTU braces for 30th anniversary

The Botswana Federation of Trade Unions (BFTU) heads for its 30th anniversary this month seeking to make a decent break with the past whilst ushering in a new generation of working class leadership.

Already, signs that the federation has started to shed its old skin has seen the mining workers' veteran, Tebogo Makhale acting as president in place of the erstwhile secretary general and incumbent leader, Dust Baipidi, of the Diamond Sorters Union.

Makhale, by all indications, will not stand for office at the organisation's national congress planned for March 24 although it would appear he has been recruited to serve in some capacity in the mediating and adjudication bodies that will help to resolve labour disputes.
