"Beware your presidents spending". This warning came from president of the opposition Botswana Congress Party (BCP), Gil Saleshando, his deputy, Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang and party secretary general, Taolo Lucas, jointly addressing a press conference yesterday.

The BCP leadership unleashed a blistering attack on President Ian Khama's administration for getting its priorities wrong. The BCP heavily criticised Khama for allocating the lion's share of the budget to his office with a significant amount, running into millions, directed at the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS).

The newly created DIS, a security organ of the state,  whose existence has instilled fear amongst civilians, has been allocated a staggering P200 million in the development budget while the Botswana Defence Force has been allocated half a 500 million. The BCP regrets that "no details have been provided detailing what the funds are to be used for".  The BCP lambasted President Khama's lack of enterprise, along with his deafening silence in the face of the unfolding global credit crunch, which has already hit Botswana's mining sector.
