The Botswana Electoral Support Network (BESNet), a group of civil society organisations in Botswana, has launched 250 election observers to monitor the 2009 general elections on Friday.

Addressing the media at the launch, BESNet Mission leader Alice Mogwe said that because of financial constraints they would cover only 30 constituencies, which they consider to be marginal. She said some of these are in Francistown and Kgalagadi.

She said that the group's membership, which is made up of organisations like Emang Basadi, Ditshwanelo, the Botswana Council of Churches (BCC) and Botswana Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (BOCONGO), conducted six workshops for election observers where they acquainted themselves with the correct election process as prescribed by the Electoral Act of Botswana, including the voting and counting process, "to ensure that participants know and understand the Code of Conduct for Election Observers, ensure that the participants are empowered to effectively perform their task as election observers and contribute to a free and fair election process".
