B&E employees still in limbo

FRANCISTOWN: Employees of mining company, Blasting and Excavating Botswana (B&E), say they are still awaiting justice after they were unfairly dismissed from their jobs in Letlhakane.

The employees, who say that the company reneged on its word after they had signed contracts, stated that they have since taken their issue up with Department of Labour. One of the employees says that though they are hoping that the department will help them, they have their doubts.

"Our boss has cited one of the senior labour officials as his friend and brags that we will never get far with the case," she said. The distressed employee says that they had been given a date to appear at the labour office with their boss, area manager, Shane Hardy, Labour Regional Officer and a mediator. "We are also complaining about the way the department of labour has handled this issue," she added. The frustrated employees say that all they want is to have their pending salaries paid and get the jobs back. "We believe the contract is not over and we need our salaries for July and to get our jobs back," she said. She also says that they have been running in circles since they reported the matter to labour. "We were told we can come to the meeting on August 11, but it has been postponed again since the regional officer is unavailable. Meanwhile, we have not received our salaries and our lives are in ruins because we are now in debt."  She says they were on contract at Mupane Gold Mining when Hardy approached her and recruited her to go and work at Damtshaa in Orapa.
