BDP will not act on Masitara's tax case

The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) does not intend to take action against Gaborone West North parliamentary aspirant Robert Masitara for his recent troubles with the taxman.

Recently the Lobatse High Court ordered Masitara to pay the government close to P1 million in un-remitted tax. The politician is a member of the BDP Central Committee. The deputy executive secretary of the party, Fidelis Molao said they have not been following the court case with keen interest because Masitara was not accused of tax evasion. He said the politician is disputing the amount of money he is supposed to pay to the taxman.
Molao said although the party has a code of conduct, it does not apply in Masitara's case, which is purely a personal matter. "I do not think he refused to pay tax. He was just querying the amount. I do not see him being summoned by the party. We believe that this is a matter he will sort out with the tax authorities," he said.

Molao said the issue was never discussed within the party. "We never saw anything that could make anybody believe that he was evading tax. He was just querying the calculations. To me there is nothing to suggest that he is charged with tax evasion," he reiterated.
