BDP to deliberate on primaries, constituencies

FRANCISTOWN: Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) secretary-general (SG), Kavis Kario, has said the main issues to be deliberated at the party’s national council (NC) and special national congress (SNC) are primary elections and reconfiguration of constituencies.

Some constituencies and wards were reconfigured following the delimitation exercise. The BDP will hold its NC and SNC on September 2 and 3 in Palapye. Over the years, BDP primary elections dubbed Bulela Ditswe in the vernacular have been rocked by allegations of electoral fraud.

In 2018, the party suspended two employees at its Secretariat over allegations that they tampered with the voters roll to favour their preferred candidates.

The situation is exacerbated by the ruling party’s admission that some of its most important election promises remain unfulfilled. This is not the change many Batswana had expected. The UDC was elected into power on a strong promise to improve lives, create jobs, protect workers and repair public services.
