SHASHEMOOKE: The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has convincingly retained Shashemooke council ward in a weekend by-election characterised by a low turnout and opposition accusations that the BDP bought the elections.

BDP's, Isaac Mabechu, garnered 383 votes followed by BNF's, Odirile Ngenda, who got 295 votes with Botswana Peoples Party (BPP) candidate, Silent Tlale, trailing behind with 78 votes.  There were seven spoilt votes.

It was apparent from the early stages of counting that the real match was going to be between the BDP and the BNF. In the beginning, the BNF and BDP went neck-to-neck for a long time until the latter party proved its mettle by amassing the majority of votes as counting progressed.
