BDP threaten court action over posters

The spat between the Manual Workers Union and the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) may end up in court if threats between the two sides are anything to go by.

Yesterday the BDP national elections coordinator Segaetsho Garekwe said the party is contemplating taking legal action against the union for campaigning against it through posters. He said they will write a letter to the union seeking clarification over the posters. "I cannot say there is or there is no possibility of a lawsuit. We cannot just declare that we are suing before identifying whom we are suing and why. First of all, we are seeking clarification from the executive committee of the union, then we would know what steps to take. Until the executive committee tell us they are responsible, and why they did so, then we can take action against them. We want them to clarify to us exactly what is the role of a union in the internal politics of a political organisation like BDP," he said.

Media reports indicate that the union is preparing its own legal action against the police officers for the arrest of a man sent to distribute the controversial posters in Bobonong constituency.
