BDP plans to kick-out unrepentant mekoko

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has said it is offering one chance to members who have decided to stand as independent candidates in the general elections before they are kicked-out of the party.

McDonald Peloetletse, BDP publicity secretary for Tswapong region said the matter of 'mekoko' - independent candidates - will be discussed at senior party level before final action is taken.

He said the party has resolved to talk with aspiring mekoko and if they do not abide by the rules and change their minds and refrain from contesting, they will be expelled. He said that in the troubled Tswapong North constituency, the ruling party is not worried by the high number of mekoko. He said the BDP won the seat with a comfortable margin in the 2004 elections against two opposition candidates and this is why it is not worried about its members who have decided to run as independents. It is said that the BDP ranks in Tswapong North is divided between the party candidate Prince Maele and his challenger in the primaries and nominated councillor Sebele Gaogopole who is now standing as an independent candidate. Charles Majweng of Lecheng is also said to be running as an independent candidate as well as one Tshikare from Maunatlala.
