A ruling party youth leader has been threatened with a P1 million suit for saying a party colleague cleaned her shoes with a T-Shirt bearing the portrait of President Ian Khama. The suit involves Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) members from rival factions.

Dithapelo Tshotlego, a youth leader associated with the A-Team faction which was supported by Khama has been sued for accusing Kesegofetse Tiragalo-Chima of cleaning her shoes using a T-Shirt bearing the President's portrait. The accusation was alleged to have been made at the Kanye congress where the A-Team was thoroughly beaten by the Kwelagobe-Kedikilwe faction. In a letter of demand, through her attorneys, Tiragalo-Chima, who is identified with the Kwelagobe-Kedikilwe faction says that Tshotlego was malicious in that he told Palapye BDP constituency chairman Rainsford Nkomo and other people that she (Tiragalo-Chima) desecrated the image of the president knowing that it was a lie. The letter states that contrary to the claims allegedly made by Tshotlego, she did not have T-Shirt with Khama's portrait during the BDP congress.

"This is because when our client arrived at the congress, it was on Saturday evening while the said T-Shirts had been distributed on Friday and specifically given to constituency secretaries, which our client is not. Further, our client throughout her attendance of the congress was putting on sports shoes that did not need to be cleaned with T-Shirts as she had the brush and polish specifically for the said type of shoes," the letter says. It adds that Tiragalo-Chima is a responsible citizen, who has never broken the law and respects Khama as her paramount chief (she is a Mongwato tribeswoman).
