BDP defamation suit goes to court

Two Molepolole Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) activists have failed to settle a defamation claim out of court and the matter is now set for hearing on April 30. The Lobatse High Court will be the scene of a legal tussle between the claimant Kabo Sebele and the defendant Kabo Morwaeng.

Sebele is a member of the Bakwena royal family. He was defeated by Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri in the BDP primaries for Molepolole North.

Morwaeng is demanding P500,000 from Sebele for defamation of character. He claims that without lawful justification, Sebele caused to be published statements about him that he knew were false. He said in February last year, Sebele made false allegations against him in a letter to the BDP chairman of the Kweneng region. He said the allegations in the correspondence were repeated in the Botswana Guardian newspaper.
