The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) branch in the Gaborone West-North constituency has written a loaded letter to the party central committee demanding that businessman and philanthropist Robert Masitara should not be opposed in the primaries for the 2009 general elections.

The letter signed by the constituency chairman Tshepo Moloko and secretary Orapeleng Disele has indicated that BDP members in the constituency want Masitara. The letter warns that anyone with plans to run in the BDP primary elections against Masitara in the Gaborone West-North will not receive support. It is not yet clear why the branch is desperate to block other candidates from contesting the primaries. There are reports that Specially Elected MP Botsalo Ntuane is interested in the constituency.

"We have received the letter from the Gaborone West-North branch," confirmed BDP spokesman Dr Comma Serema. He indicated that he will pass the letter to the central committee that is scheduled to sit on September 6 to discuss the issue. Serema said that it is obvious the constituency members are lobbying for their candidate but he regretted their approach. "We will be writing to them on how to lobby," he stated. The Gaborone West-North seat is held by Botswana National Front (BNF) leader Otsweletse Moupo. He beat Masitara in the October 2005 by-election after the death of the then incumbent Paul Rantao of the BNF. The constituency is a BNF stronghold.
