The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Gaborone region has out-rightly rejected 12 of the 18 proposed changes to the party constitution. In a position paper, the region has expressed concern that the party task force charged with constitutional changes has not provided sufficient grounds to effect the proposed amendments. .

The region composed of the five Gaborone constituencies contend that there is general concern that the amendments threaten the democratic fibre of the party

The task force was headed by former cabinet minister Tebelelo Seretse. Many people within the party feel the proposed reforms seek to transfer power from the party structures to the party president. The Gaborone region has dismissed the recommendation of the task force that wants the party to shift away from the regular holding of congress and to increase the term of office of the central committee, to five years. It has also rejected proposals that the party central committee to be elected at this year's congress, should to remain in place till the 2009 general elections and beyond. The BDP holds its congress and elections every two years. The Gaborone region has dismissed the recommendation that the party president can reprimand, suspend, debar and even expel party members. It has rejected the proposal that the state vice president in a BDP government should automatically become the party chairman.
