BDF soldiers celebrate 20 years of service

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Botswana Defence Force (BDF) soldiers have been advised to make their families part of the organisation.

Speaking during the 20th anniversary of Intake 34 at Eastern Military Garrison (EMG) over the weekend, the commander of Ground Forces, Major General Pius Mokgware, said the life of a soldier is made up of three pillars - job satisfaction, family and health. "You cannot work as a soldier when you are not fit. You cannot work if your family is not happy and if the environment is not conducive. You must create a culture to make your family to be part of this organisation.  We are no longer living in the olden days when our wives did not know what was happening in our organisation and they must know our language. They must know when you claim leave concession and why the claim is done," Mokgware said.

He explained that life is a journey and has many stops with each bringing new experiences. He advised the soldiers to strengthen their lives by getting married. "It must not come as a surprise when you are told that it is time for you to retire. There are some officers who are shocked when they are told that it is time to retire. Prepare your lives and know that there is life after retirement, and that you will be going back to civilian life. You started your journey 20 years back and you must know where you are going," he said.
