One soldier has died following an accident at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB) on Friday morning, the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) has confirmed.

A press statement issued by the military stated that one of their own was overrun by a mobile gun system leading to fatal injuries in line of work. "BDF wishes to inform members of the public about the unfortunate incident in which a member of BDF stationed at SSKB was fatally overrun by a mobile gun system in an accident that happened this morning at SSKB," reads the release.

The BDF added the deceased was part of the gun crew that was scheduled for a training programme aimed at the force readiness. The names of the fallen hero have been withheld to afford the family time to grieve. "While the BDF conveys heartfelt condolences to the family and public," BDF stated, "it withholds the name of the deceased to allow the family the space to privately mourn during this difficult time." Investigations into the tragedy are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragic loss of the soldier.
