BDF commander calls for regional defence force

Brigadier General Olekanye Mabengane of the Botswana Defence Forces (BDF) has said southern Africa must consider a joint defence unit to counter terrorist attacks and foreign invasions.

Speaking in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe during a bi-lateral defence cultural exchange games at the National University of Science and Technology, Mbegane said that like any region, southern Africa has to ensure that its peace and security remains a top priority. He said the region could be a target for terror attacks or foreign invasions because of its vast natural resources.

"Our region needs to be ready to defend its territory from foreign invasion because the world is no longer safe and the only possible way to do that is to form a united defence force from all member states. We should not wait for a threatening incident to occur. Our forces must start dialogue now so that the region is not caught unaware if terrorists strike."
