BDF boss gives assurances on succession plan

Commander of Botswana Defence Force (BDF), General Tebogo Masire has stated that there are many capable officers that can succeed him when he retires - probably in two years time.

He told journalists yesterday that the army has a succession plan and there is no cause for alarm about his departure. The BDF succession question arises because of the recent retirement of commander of the Air Wing, Tumelo Paledi, the ouster of Major General Pius Mokgware last year, and the criminal case against the second in command Otisitswe Tiroyamodimo. "The President has no headache at all," Masire said.

He exuded confidence that even the police have a succession plan and there is nothing to worry about. Masire and Commissioner of Police Thebeyame Tsimako had their contracts extended last year. The military boss stated that he is likely to stay on until such time when President Ian Khama feels he should go.
