BCP to send advance team to LETLHAKENG WEST

FRANISTOWN: The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) will soon send an advance team to Letlhakeng West to investigate the possibility of contesting the upcoming by-election following the death of Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) parliamentarian, Maxwell Motowane late last year.

In an interview with The Monitor, the party's publicity secretary Taolo Lucas said, "We will send a team to Letlhakeng West to find out if it is conducive for the party to contest in the coming by-elections. The team will carry out a thorough assessment to find out if our structures in the constituency are functional and ready for elections".He explained, "If the advance team reports back that party structures are dysfunctional and not ready to contest the elections, we will wait for the 2014 general elections".

Asked if it will not be advantageous for the BCP to contest the elections even if its structures are not ready in order to market the party for the 2014 elections, he said: "If the advance party thinks that the party should contest the elections, the central committee will not stand in their way even if the situation on the ground is not ideal."According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), only the BDP and the BNF contested in the constituency in 2009. The BDP was voted by 3,826 while the BNF was voted by 3,792. The BDP won the constituency by a margin of 34 votes.
