BCP support swells in Selebi-Phikwe

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Botswana Congress Party (BCP) is slowly but surely gaining political control of Selebi-Phikwe at the expense of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

Besides snatching the Selebi-Phikwe West parliamentary seat, the BCP gave the BDP a huge scare in Selebi-Phikwe East where it grabbed two more council seats from the ruling party. The BDP has lost its strongholds of Botshabelo North and Botshabelo East wards to the BCP. Botshabelo North has been without a councillor for some time following the decision by the Independent Electoral Commission not to hold by-elections this year following the death of councillor Michael Tidimane. BCP has retained Botshabelo West and Botshabelo Central to leave BDP with only three wards - Botshabelo South, Ikageleng Phase 1 and Ikageleng Phase 2.

As the BCP was causing havoc, the main opposition, Botswana National Front (BNF) performed dismally. The party failed to win even a single council seat in Selebi-Phikwe. The BCP also made serious inroads in BDP strongholds like Mmadinare constituency where it snatched Sefhophe ward but in Bobirwa it suffered a setback as it lost its two wards to the ruling party.
