BCP rallies behind murder-accused Tawele

FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) parliamentary hopeful in Francistown South, Vain Mamela, has challenged anyone with evidence of murder against any BCP councillor to lead that evidence in court.

BCP councillor for Ipopeng in Franistown South, David Interest Tawele and one Steve Phenyego are suspects in the murder of 13-year-old Lesego Phenyego whose charred body was found behind Gold Mine Junior Secondary School in Block 8 two weeks ago. Steve is the stepfather of the deceased.

Addressing a political rally at ET Freedom Square on Sunday, Mamela charged that Officer Commanding Number 1 District Senior Superintendent Alakanani Makobo was trying Tawele in the tabloid press. "We suspect that this trial by the media is a conspiracy between the police and prominent politicians," an emotional Mamela told the rally. He likened Tawele's case to that of Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai who was charged with treason a few years ago in what Mamela said was a plot by Robert Mugabe.
