Gaborone Central MP, Dumelang Saleshando of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has described his party's win in the Saturday Village Ward by-election as a referendum on who will carry the constituency in next year's general elections.

He was speaking after Seabelo Thekiso, a University of Botswana (UB) student beat Kagiso Ntime of the Botswana National Front (BNF) and Armstrong Dikgafela of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) to become the new Village councillor. The seat was previously held by former Gaborone mayor, Nelson Ramaotwana of the BNF who resigned recently to join the civil service. The BCP man, Thekiso, was therefore considered an underdog in the by-election but he caused a shock by scooping 180 votes out of 341 to win the seat. Dikgafela came second by polling 98 votes while Ntime was third with 63.

That is why the BCP is celebrating Thekiso's win as a sign that the balance of power in the constituency has changed. Saleshando, who is facing Gomolemo Motswaledi of the BDP in next year's general elections said that the results of the by-election is an opinion poll on who will win the constituency. He warned other parties to watch out for the BCP.
