BCP hears plot to postpone elections

FRANCISTOWN: The man said to be at the centre of a plot to cancel next month's Botswana Congress Party (BCP) elections has denied the reports though the party has admitted hearing of plans to postpone the polls.

Comfort Molosiwa has said reports that he heads a cabal of officials from Palapye and Tswapong constituencies planning to engineer a motion to postpone the elections are malicious while BCP secretary general, Kesitegile Gobotswang said: "Yes the party is aware of talk that some party members want the elections to be postponed but as the central committee, we are preparing for the polls as per the constitution".

There are claims that Molosiwa and his group is trying to convince one of the constituencies in his Letswapo region to table a motion at the party congress in Selebi-Phikwe to have the elections postponed. The group reportedly wants the current committee, headed by Gaborone Central MP, Dumelang Saleshando, to stay until after next year's general elections.  It is said the idea of postponing the polls is inspired by feelings that losers may sow seeds of discontent and destabilise the party ahead of the general elections. Another consideration is the viability of holding party elections and primaries in the same year.
