BCP councillors lock horns over deputy mayoralty

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The image of unity characteristic of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) took a knock as both the party's chief whip, Molefhe Molatlhegi and the incumbent deputy mayor, Maxwell Kelebetse declared their interest to run for the position held by the latter at the start of the full council this week.

The two candidates polled seven votes each, compelling newly-elected mayor, Godfrey Mbaiwa to break the tie, tipping the balance in favour of councillor Kelebetse.

As a result, both Mbaiwa and Kelebetse retained their positions as mayor and deputy mayor of Selebi-Phikwe respectively. In another surprising move, Kelebetse was nominated, seconded and supported by Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) councillors who maintained a united front throughout the elections.
