BCP, BAM make headway in cooperation talks

The joint Botswana Congress Party (BCP)- Botswana Alliance Movement (BAM) Task Force has drawn up a set of power sharing principles as part of the cooperation talks between the two parties, ahead of the 2009 general elections. BAM and BCP say the apportioning of wards and constituencies has been substantially completed.

However, more consultations are still remaining in the Francistown West and South East South constituencies. In a document signed by representatives of the two parties, the principle of sharing would apply for both the central and local government portfolios and post election structures.
T

he document dated April 16 says the two parties have agreed to come up with a joint manifesto for the 2009 elections. At another level, BAM and BCP have committed themselves to formulating a compulsory common code of conduct to be signed by all representatives of the two parties.
The code of conduct will be the key instrument for enforcement of discipline and the regulation of relations amongst the cadres and broad membership of both parties, the document says. Both BCP and BAM say they intend to use the pact model to allow each party to have its own symbol in the elections. The cooperating partners will not contest against each other. They assert that they adopted the pact model after interrogating the shortfalls of the 2004 pact model used by BAM, Botswana Peoples Party (BPP) and Botswana National Front (BNF).
