Bayford withdrawal disrupts CMS corruption case

The P20 million Central Medical Stores (CMS) corruption case was thrown into disarray yesterday when one of the defence attorneys, Dick Bayford filed a notice of withdrawal, catching his client Clement Molefe by surprise.

However, another defence attorney, Duma Boko came to the rescue and made an application to Regional Magistrate, Lot Moroka that Molefe should be given time to negotiate with Bayford to return as his lawyer. Boko said he told  Bayford before he filed the withdrawal letter that his decision would throw the matter in disarray. "Efforts should be made to retain Bayford's representation in this matter. It remains a possibility that he may remain in the case. Therefore I urgue this court to afford his client (Molefe) an opportunity to continue negotiations with Bayford," Boko said. He successfully applied for postponement to November 9, pending the outcome of the negotiations between Molefe and Bayford.

He told the court that in the interim, the defence and the prosecution will settle the outstanding issues of admissions to shorten the length of trial.
