A month after their victory at the Lobatse High Court, Basarwa are still travelling long distances gathering water melons to quench their thirst, as government is dragging its feet on re-commissioning the Mothomelo borehole inside the Central Kgalagadi Game Reserve (CKGR).

The court of appeal ruled in favour of Basarwa on January 31, 2011 in a case in which Matsipane Mosetlhanyane and Gakenyatsiwe Mosetlhanyane were challenging a last year ruling by the High Court that denied them access to water from the Mothomelo borehole.

Speaking to Mmegi yesterday, one of the lawyers who represented the Basarwa, Junner Seranne said they have been informed that the government and the Gantsi District Council were in talks to facilitate the re-commissioning of the Mothomelo borehole but was yet to confirm with the relevant officials. She added that they were waiting to see if the equipment and machinery that government is intending to use is up to standard or they will have to find their own machinery.
