XERE: Despite praising government for recognising the Basarwa community, Xere’s Kgosi Molaodi Moipolai has decried that residents of his settlement are still failing to escape abject poverty.

Speaking at the Xere Cultural Festival on Saturday Kgosi Moipolai said they need developments that could bring employment for the youth and improve livelihoods.

Xere is characteristically still underdeveloped and there is no source of employment. The villagers depend on government food baskets for survival. Moipolai said due to lack of employment in the village, the youth have resorted to alcohol and substance abuse. He added that young girls also dropped out of school because of teenage pregnancy. Kgosi Moipolai stated that because of poverty, a number of young girls find themselves sleeping with older men in order to get alcohol in return.
