Banda rivals vow to reimpose windfall tax

NDOLA: The scrapped windfall tax on base metals by President Rupiah Banda's government is one of the major and emotive topics in campaigns leading up to the September 20 tripartite elections in Zambia.

Two major opposition political parties, the Patriotic Front (PF) and the United Party for National Development (UPND), say they would re-introduce windfall tax on base metals including copper if they were voted into power.

UPND presidential candidate Hikainde Hichilema, a University of Zambia-trained economist, says that Zambia is losing millions of dollars as a result of the scrapped windfall tax.  And PF economic advisor Bob Sichinga told Muvi Television, a privately-owned TV station, that his party would re-introduce windfall tax on minerals if it was elected into power in the September 20 Presidential, parliamentary and Local Government elections.  Max Nkole, the former chairman of the disbanded Task Force on Corruption, has also supported re-introduction of windfall taxes.
