Banda rivals recoil ahead of crucial MMD elections?

LUSAKA: There was a carnival-like atmosphere in Lusaka, when supporters of the ruling party, the Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) draped in party colours and chanting slogans converged in force to witness the filing in of nominations for elections to the party's 60-member national executive committee.

They came from all corners of the Zambian capital, fired up and they cheered noisily as their preferred candidates filed in for elections to be held at the party convention which opens in the central town of Kabwe next Tuesday (April 5).

There were no real surprises. The Zambian president Rupiah Banda is still set to retain the position of party leader and  may even do so unopposed in what is otherwise shaping up to be a  lively contest. His position is virtually unassailable.
