FRANCISTOWN: Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) central committee has unanimously elected Gaborone businessman Mpho Balopi as its new secretary general. The committee made the decision yesterday.

BDP acting executive secretary, Lee Lesetedi told Mmegi that Balopi was nominated and seconded without opposition for the position left vacant after the recent resignation of Kanye North MP, Kentse Rammidi.

He said the unanimous decision was a sign of confidence in Balopi who was elected a member of the central committee in July at the party elective congress held at Madiba Senior Secondary School in Mahalapye.  The election was done through the controversial compromise list promoted by President Ian Khama.  The compromise list was adopted in a bid to bring peace to the troubled BDP house.
