BALA baptises national branch of African Union

The Botswana Association of Local Authorities (BALA) became the first national organisation in Africa to launch the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA) after the continental one was launched in Accra, Ghana in July this year.

Speaking at an event that was held at Maharaja for women councillors and administrators from the Ministry of Local Government, the president of BALA, Kentse Rammidi said that they see the commission as a vehicle to empower the women councillors.

Rammidi said that they took the Ghana resolution as an opportunity to bring to surface the challenges that women face in participating as representatives at local government. "We at BALA have been concerned by the lack of women on the bigger stage of local government be it their numbers in our council chambers, leadership of the councils or inclusion in the BALA executive committee," he said.
