Bakgatla Aim For Self-Sufficiency

Kgosi kgolo Kgafela II on Friday unveiled his road map that will see Bakgatla embarking on a variety of self-reliance projects to ensure prosperity.

Addressing his people for the first time since his September 20 coronation, Kgafela II said such projects would, among other things, enable him to carry out his mandate as Kgosi kgolo without much equivocation because instead of relying on a government salary he would be paid from funds generated by his people. Kgafela II said receiving salaries from government makes the Kgosi kgolo accountable to the state as a public servant.

For this reason Kgafela II said he does not intend to be employed by government but would prefer a situation whereby his needs are taken care of by his subjects. It is on this basis that the Kgosi kgolo said it is important that Bakgatla become self-reliant and start up projects to generate income. He emphasised that a tribe must have its own assets.
