Bakalanga cultural festival billed for Oct

FRANCISTOWN: The annual Bakalanga Cultural Festival will be held from October 1-2 this year at the historical Domboshaba Ruins under the theme, "My Language, My Pride".

The event, which was first held in 2000, has become a permanent feature in the calendar of this area. At this time, many people including non-Bakalanga, throng the Domboshaba hills to enjoy Bakalanga food and culture.

The occasion normally features speeches, Ikalanga poetry, song and dance as well as displays and the various Ikalanga culinary delights.  Bakalanga have been in discussion with government about the fate of their language since independence when the teaching of this language was discontinued. Government has, for the past 45 years, insisted that the teaching of Ikalanga or any other language besides Setswana and English was not only inimical to national unity, but was not sustainable economically.
