Bail for alleged 'wife killer' to be decided today

The Village Chief Magistrate Linah Oagile-Mokibe is today expected to make a ruling in case in which a man is accused of killing his wife, who fell from her flat in Gaborone's Phase 4 suburb last month.

Modise Essau is accused of the death of his wife, Setshwano Essau, on April 25. The couple lived separately. The ruling came after the prosecution asked for further remand of Essau while investigations continue. Motivating his application through an affidavit by the investigating officer last Friday, counsel Kabelo Nkwe of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) said investigations in the case were at an infant stage and they feared that if granted bail, the accused person might interfere with investigation and state witnesses.

"We have accordingly filed our affidavit with the court stating our reasons why we want the accused to be further remanded. The investigating officer mentioned in his affidavit few things he needs to investigate. He still has not received a post-mortem report and the report will assist in informing us about the cause of the death.
