Autism organisation to be launched

The first steps leading up to the formation of a national Autism Association of Botswana will be taken tomorrow when delegates meet at the University of Botswana (UB).

A steering committee that will draw up a constitution and lay the groundwork for the new organisation will be elected at the meeting, to be held at UB's Block 252, Lecture Room 4, a spokesperson told Mmegi in Gaborone yesterday.

But what is autism?
Tam Lombard, a specialist in autism, says: "In very broad terms, autism is a neuro-developmental disorder that affects communication, rigidity in thoughts and behaviour and sociability.  People with autism also have sensory problems. If your child shows unusual behaviours in any of these areas, it's important to take them to a professional for further investigation. Early detection is important."
