ATMs thwart 'amateur' thugs

Nearly 17 months since the first ATM blasting incident was recorded in Botswana, the ATM thieves are yet to retrieve cash from ATMs. In all the three incidents the criminals were caught at the scene of the botched crime.

Three ATMs in Phakalane, Letlhakane and Ramatlabama have been blasted so far using explosives related to the type used in mining, but police say in all the incidents the criminals hit blanks.

Assistant Superintendent, Near Bagali, who is also assistant PR officer at the Botswana Police, says so far "there is no change in the strategies as these criminals tend to use explosives as a method to blast the machines. However, they have failed in all their attempts to get the money.
