Art therapy reaches hospitals

Botswana Council of Women, in collaboration with Debswana Mining Company, have initiated a project to provide hospitals with artwork as therapy to patients that will contribute to their wellbeing.

Known as Healing Art Project, its coordinator Oarabile Keosedile said there is tremendous need for hospitals to be homely and beautiful for those who are struggling both physically and emotionally.  "Healing Art Project is done by Botswana Council of Women and Debswana Mining Company and they have already started to provide artwork to hospitals to make them therapeutic and beautiful places of healing," she said. Keosedile said they have already started sourcing for donations to buy artwork from local artists.

She said that hospitals cannot afford to beautify their environments and it is therefore important for Batswana to help in whatever way they can. "The chronically under-resourced public health cannot provide luxurious environments, but through donated art we can provide a setting that encourages healing and wellness. Also one thing we are sure of is that one way or the other we will all end up in these hospitals even if is not us in the death beds," she said.
