Arrest of MMD's Angolan 'refugee MP' sparks alarm

NDOLA: The arrest of suspected Angolan refugee by immigration officers after he secured a seat in the Zambia Parliament following the September 20 tripartite elections has sent shockwaves across the country.

In fact, questions are being asked whether there might not be more refugees elected to positions of authority in Zambia, which shares the border with at least nine countries namely: Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Malawi, Namibia, Burundi and Tanzania.

Robert Chikesi, who stood on the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) ticket, was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Mangango in Kaoma in Western Province that shares the border with Angola, a country that generated an exodus of refugees into Zambia during its civil war that erupted after the former Portuguese colony gained independence in 1975.
