MOGODITSHANE: The African armyworm has hit Mmopane and Gakgatla. Mogoditshane/Thamaga sub-district council chairperson Driver Motlokwa announced this yesterday during the ongoing full council meeting in Mogoditshane.

He said the Ministry of Agriculture has announced the outbreak of the worm notorious for destroying a range of crops."In a press statement, the ministry stated that the worm is green when young and has black and white stripes on its side when it matures and measures approximately five centimetres in length," he said. Motlokwa told the council that the worm has a characteristic inverted 'V' shape on its head and is said to belong to the family of moths. He said that the worm has a habit of marching in large numbers from grassland into crop fields. The worms cause massive damage as they eat day and night. Motlokwa said if left unattended and undetected early, they could cause more damage. "I would like to inform the public that eight teams have been deployed in Kweneng District to control this worm. Of these teams, two have tractor-mounted boom sprayers. Two teams have motorised sprayers and the rest are operating knapsack sprayers," he added. He urged the public to report any sighting of the worm to the nearest agricultural office.
