Army planes and the money they cost

The Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security's spending on aircraft and related costs across the Botswana Defence Force (BDF), the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) and Botswana Police Service (BPS) seems set to remain constant or rise marginally in the coming financial year.

This is according to estimates from the 2012-13 National Budget as presented in Parliament by the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Kenneth Matambo, last week. With P200,000 set aside for President Ian Khama's in-flight catering, the Presidential Jet, OK 1, continues to draw funds from the total budget.  The BDF will also draw P65,000 for in-flight catering. Insurance cover for OK 1 will cost government nothing less than P3 million for the financial year, while the police projects will need P80,000 for insurance.

Meanwhile, the replacement programme of the army aircraft fleet will cost P68m in the acquisition of new trainer planes.
