Colonel Molomo described the contest as a theatre of skills testing, application of first aid and entertainment. The competitions were also an expose of the benefits of first aid to health and medical challenges encountered in everyday life."The initiative is in line with the rudiments of Safety, Health and the Environment in the mining industry," he said. "First aid is the secondary layer of the safety strategy of mining operations."

Molomo explained that, when the primary layer of the strategy failed, it was important to invoke the secondary layer in order to minimise the impact of accidents, including loss of life. It was also important that the acquired competencies were implemented and fulfilled at the highest level.
