Another chapter in elusive opposition unity

The Botswana National Front (BNF) and the Botswana Peoples Party (BPP) have finally confirmed, after weeks of speculation, that they are exploring ways of cooperating.

The two opposition parties released a joint statement on Tuesday confirming an introductory meeting they held last Saturday. Two days before the meeting, BNF spokesman, Moeti Mohwasa admitted that preparation for the talks are underway. But BPP secretary general, Edward Mpoloka guardedly told Mmegi that the BNF have not approached them about the talks. "So far, everything we have heard is from the media," he said. He added that should the BNF propose talks, the BPP is willing to listen to what they have to say.

The initiator of the talks, the BNF appears to have made the necessary preparations.
