The Botswana Defence Force engineering unit and the air arm are currently involved in the construction of an airstrip in Shakawe. Senior government spokesperson, Dr Jeff Ramsay told Mmegi that the BDF is constructing the airstrip though he denied reports that it is on President Ian Khama's private land.

"An airstrip is being constructed at Shakawe, which will service the President, as well as others. It is not being built on land owned by the President," said Ramsay. He said the airstrip will be available for both private and public use. He could not tell how much is being used on the project.
