African Youth Seek AU Voice

African youth councils are pressing for inclusion in the African Union (AU) decision making as an authority in African youth affairs.

Botswana National Youth Council (BNYC) director, Fidelis Molao, who recently returned from a Pan African Youth Union meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe, says the youth councils decided that they no longer want to sit in AU sessions as mere observers.

"The Pan African Youth Union (PAYU) has access to the AU as observers, but we have now decided we should be considered as a specialised agency of the AU on youth matters so that whenever the AU meets we should be there to provide guidance regarding the direction youth development in Africa should take. This is one of the recommendations we took at the Harare meeting and forwarded to the Committee of Ministers of Youth," Molao told The Monitor in Gaborone at the weekend.
