African big names expected at BDP anniversary

The Botswana Democratic Party said it is expecting African National Congress deputy president and South Africa deputy president, Kgalema Motlanthe, Tanzanian president, Jakaya Kikwete and other leaders from political parties in Zimbabwe, Zambia and others in the African region at its 50th anniversary.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday in Gaborone, BDP secretary general, Mpho Balopi said Tendai Biti, the speaker of parliament in Zimbabwe and Movement for Democracy (BMD) secretary general will also attend the celebrations.  “From Zanu PF we will have its chairperson Khaya Moyo whilst the ANC’s Motlanthe will be accompanied by other leaders like  Lindiwe Zulu and Jeff Radebe who is the ANC national executive committee member,” he said. Balopi also said that all political parties in Africa, which share political ideas with the BDP have also indicated they will be in attendance.

The party also expects more than 14,000 party (BDP) members from the 57 constituencies in Botswana. Already 2,000 members from Gaborone West North have indicated that they will attend, he said. He said that the festivities slated for the whole of this coming weekend, will start off with an unveiling ceremony at the Morula tree by the American Embassy, where the first BDP meeting took place in February 1962."Then the celebrations we will go to the UB stadium where on Saturday we will have the main celebrations.  These will include among others great performances by 17 popular local artists," he said. Some of these artists are Culture Spears, Soccer Moruakgomo, Ndingo Johwa and others.Meanwhile the Botswana Congress Party and Botswana Movement for Democracy have said they will attend the festivities.
