Affidavits reveal BDP leadership paralysis

The replying affidavits of suspended Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) secretary general Gomolemo Motswaledi and chairman Daniel Kwelagobe in the case against President Ian Khama on Wednesday was not just a legal document.

It revealed the paralysis or mistrust between the top BDP leadership. Both Motswaledi and Kwelagobe maintained that Khama has arrogated to himself powers that ordinarily reside with the central committee. They stated that Khama is not authorised under the BDP constitution to act on behalf of the BDP on legal issues unless a meeting of the central committee had been convened seeking a resolution to that effect.

They maintained that had Khama convened a central committee meeting and asked to be given the authority he arrogated to himself, he would have been snubbed. This is because a majority of members of BDP central committee supported Motswaledi and want his suspension by Khama to be set aside. "I know for a fact that had Khama called that meeting, the majority of the members of the central committee would have voted to support Motswaledi's application and the relief it sought," Kwelagobe said in his affidavit.
