University of Botswana academic, Dr Letshwiti Tutwane has revealed that government's policy to run publicly-funded media as state media started with founding President, Sir Seretse Khama.

Presenting a paper titled The Myth of Press Freedom in Botswana - From Seretse Khama to Ian Khama at a World Press Freedom Day symposium held at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology recently, Tutwane related that in 1968 a consultant by the name of Hughes gave a report that formed the basis of government's media policy.

The academic said on account of Hughes' report, government decided to have state media as opposed to a public service media. "Radio Botswana should be seen as a government department not as a pubic service media. It should be similar to the information department," Tutwane quoted from a directive he said was issued at the time.
